Our mission
MTÜ Kasside Turvakodu is a small charity that helps abandoned and homeless cats find a new and loving home. We believe it is very important to improve the culture of animal ownership and to raise awareness of the problems of homeless animals in society.
Officially we were founded by 6 animal lovers on 15 March 2007, but in reality we have been operating since 2004. Help for Animals is only possible thanks to donations and goodwill from private individuals – we do not receive any subsidies from local authorities or the state. The donations are used 100% to support the homeless cats – to buy cat food and supplies, to rent cat rooms and to pay for the cats’ medical bills.
In our tiny organization, animals are cared for by volunteers who do this alongside their personal work, family and other commitments. Nobody in our association is paid, and everything we do is based on the goodwill of cat lovers, their time and their desire to help those who cannot help themselves.
We believe that all cats are special and unique. Whether they are black and white or red, short-haired or long-haired, one-eyed or two-eyed, young or old… We believe that every abandoned cat should be given a chance at a better life, because every cat has a home somewhere – even if it sometimes takes a little longer to find one. That’s why the MTÜ Kasside Turvakodu is a no-kill shelter, which means that no animals are euthanized at the MTÜ Kasside Turvakodu and all cats are kept in a shelter until a home is found.
About what we do
MTÜ Kasside Turvakodu has a cute and cosy cat room in the centre of Tallinn, on the edge of Kadriorg. There are 50-60 cats living permanently in the cat room, all of them waiting for their forever homes. You can visit our cat room every day, but you need to make an appointment in advance. Volunteers are available to look after the cats on a scheduled basis, not all day.
We look after around 150-200 meadow cats and kittens throughout the year, and find new homes for an average of 150-200 cats and kittens in a year. In addition, the Cats Sanctuary has several dozen shelters. Any cat lover who wants to contribute to helping animals can become a shelter. Once a cat is in a shelter, it is on the Cats’ Shelter list, which means that the Cats’ Shelter has an obligation to actively look for a forever home for the cat and all the cat’s maintenance costs are covered by the Cats’ Shelter. However, there are more homeless cats than there are donations to be collected, so any contribution you can make to help the shelter cats is very much appreciated!
Volunteers answer our hotline and hotline while juggling work, family and other commitments, including the daily care of cats, clinic visits, requests for help and interactions with cat lovers. Therefore, your call may not be answered immediately. Try several times, if possible send a letter to – info@kassideturvakodu.ee. If you have not received a reply to the email you sent within a few days, please write again. Our volunteers will do their best to help you and animals in need, but we need a reasonable time to respond.
